We drink water to keep us alive. We cannot live without drinking any water or any liquid material for more than 3-4 days. Yes, water is basic for us but then we have many drinks that we enjoy and some of them are very healthy for human beings. In this post, I have made a list and described the Top Ten Drinks in the world.
Tea
Tea, though initially known as an herbal plant,
eventually became a part of aristocratic beverage culture. However, it has now
transformed into a daily drink for the general public. Tea mainly comes from
the plant species Camellia sinensis, whose leaves are processed in
various ways or sometimes directly brewed in boiling water before consumption.
Although tea originated in China, it gradually spread across the world and is now
considered a cash crop in many countries.
All the types of tea we consume are mainly
classified into six categories. These classifications are based primarily on
the processing
methods of the tea. The six types are: white tea, yellow
tea, green tea, oolong tea, black tea, and pu-erh tea.
White tea is the least processed tea. Yellow
tea is processed by wrapping it in paper and steaming it for an extended
period. Green tea leaves are either steamed or pan-fried after drying to retain
the tea's fresh flavor and green color. Oolong tea is processed in a way that
it lies between green tea and black tea, resulting in a variety of flavors.
Black tea is the most widely consumed tea, often enjoyed with milk, sugar, and
other ingredients. Black tea leaves are dried, rolled, and heat-treated, then
categorized into different grades.
Pu-erh tea, although initially processed like
green tea, goes through a fermentation process. The older the pu-erh tea, the
richer its taste and the higher its demand.
Though there are mainly six types of tea, the
preparation and consumption vary depending on the dietary habits of different
countries—sometimes served cold, sometimes hot. Due to the caffeine content in
tea, drinking tea has become a habitual practice for many.
Coffee
After water and tea, coffee is the most consumed beverage in the world. It is mostly consumed as a hot drink but cold coffee also has a significant demand. Although the first evidence of coffee was found in Yemen, Brazil holds the top position in coffee production, followed by Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia.
There are two main species of coffee plants: Coffea
arabica and Coffea canephora (commonly known as Robusta). One of the most
expensive coffees in the world is Kopi Luwak, which is made from coffee beans
that have been eaten and excreted by a small mammal called the palm civet. In
Thailand, another highly expensive coffee, Black
Ivory Coffee is produced by feeding
coffee beans to black elephants and collecting the beans from their waste. This
coffee holds the title of the most expensive coffee in the world, selling for
$2,000 per kilogram.
Coffee beans are roasted and processed before being
brewed. It is commonly served in various styles, including black coffee,
espresso, cappuccino, and café latte.
Ingredients such as sugar, milk, cream, and other preferred additives are often
used to enhance its taste. Additionally, coffee presentation has become an art
form, with baristas creating intricate designs on the surface of the beverage.
Lassi
Lassi is a cold beverage. Although it originated in Punjab, lassi is a very popular drink in the Indian subcontinent. While yogurt and water are the main ingredients of lassi, several variations exist, such as salty lassi, sweet lassi, spiced lassi, bhang lassi, and fruit lassi. By blending yogurt with water and adding ingredients like sugar, salt, cardamom, rose water, saffron, ginger, nuts, cumin, or black pepper, different flavors of lassi can be prepared.
Bhang lassi is usually made in India during the Holi
festival. It is prepared by mixing bhang (a liquid cannabis-based ingredient)
with yogurt and water. Generally, only licensed shops are permitted to sell
bhang lassi during Holi.
Fruit lassi, made with fruits like mango, watermelon, and strawberry mixed with yogurt, is a delicious beverage loved by people of
all ages. In Bangladesh, the Beauty
Lassi of Old Dhaka is so famous that it has been in
business for almost a century. The crushed ice in Old Dhaka's Beauty Lassi
provides a refreshing and cooling sensation for everyone.
A significant market has grown around lassi in the
Indian subcontinent. Since it provides relief from the heat and is quite
affordable, lassi is sold in large quantities during summer. With just a few
ingredients, easy preparation, and a delightful taste, the demand for lassi
continues to increase day by day.
Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate is a delightful drink made from melted
chocolate, cocoa powder, milk or water, and sugar. It is not only tasty but also
beneficial for health. In some countries, hot chocolate is made thick and rich,
while in others, it is prepared as a thinner beverage. It is often served with
whipped cream or marshmallows for added flavor.
The main ingredient of hot chocolate comes from the
cocoa tree, whose flowers, leaves, bark, and fruits all have medicinal
properties and are used in medicine production. The global
market for hot chocolate is vast. It is estimated that the
market size of hot chocolate, valued at $21.35 billion in 2025, will grow to
$30.21 billion by 2034.
Fruit Juice
In addition to fresh fruits and their peels, sugar,
flavors, and other ingredients are often added to enhance the taste of fruit
juice. It is said that for diabetic patients, fruit juice without added sugar
or other ingredients is more beneficial. However, excessive fruit juice
consumption can be harmful to children's teeth. That’s why doctors encourage
eating whole fruits rather than consuming juice.
Fruit juice is a delightful beverage. Due to its
fresh taste and various benefits, its demand is continuously rising. As a
result, the commercial opportunities surrounding fruit juice are also
expanding. In 2023, the global
fruit juice market was valued at $147.36 billion and it is
expected to reach $215.86 billion by 2032. Increased awareness, easy access to
nutritious beverages, and a variety of flavors contribute to the growing
interest in fruit juice.
Coconut Water
It is rare for someone to visit a seaside beach and
not drink coconut water. There is also a logical reason behind this—coconut
trees grow abundantly in coastal areas, yielding a high number of fruits. It is
also known that coconut water from these regions has a distinct taste.
The highest number of coconut trees and coconut
production can be found in Indonesia, India, and the Philippines. Every 100
milliliters of coconut water contains 19 kilocalories of energy. Indonesia is
recognized as the world's largest producer of coconut water.
It is estimated that the global
coconut water market will reach $3.15 billion by 2025 and is
expected to grow to $5.25 billion by 2030. Coconut water is a refreshing drink
that helps keep the body highly hydrated and provides relaxation to both the
body and mind.
Smoothies
A smoothie is a fresh beverage made by pureeing fruits and vegetables. Many people confuse Lassi with smoothies, but Lassi originated many years ago, dating back to around 1000 BCE. In contrast, smoothies were first created in the 1930s after the invention of the blender.
The base of a smoothie is fruit and vegetable puree,
whereas the base of a lassi is yogurt. In short, a smoothie is made by blending
fruit and vegetable puree with milk, protein powder, water, and other preferred
ingredients to enhance flavor, along with crushed ice. A smoothie is a
nutritious drink and its nutritional value depends on the proportion of fruits
and vegetables used. Since fruits are naturally sweet, adding extra sugar can
turn the smoothie into a high-calorie beverage.
There are three main types of smoothies, like as
Green Smoothie Contains a higher
proportion of raw leafy greens and fewer fruits. Additional ingredients are
added to enhance the taste. Protein Smoothie is made with fruit and vegetables
combined with protein powder, milk, and other flavor-enhancing ingredients.
People who want to increase their protein intake usually drink protein
smoothies and Yogurt Smoothie uses yogurt as the primary source of protein.
Banana and strawberry smoothies are the most popular
with the highest sales in the United States. In recent years, the smoothie
market has seen significant growth. The
global smoothie market is expected to grow from $18.44
billion in 2024 to $19.91 billion in 2025. By 2029, the global market is
projected to reach $27.46 billion.
Smoothie King was the first company to enter the
smoothie market, but many other companies have successfully established
themselves since then. As a nutritious drink, the demand for smoothies is
expected to keep rising and many people also prefer making them at home.
Lemonade
Lemonade or lemon juice is a beverage generally made with lemon and sugar. Although evidence suggests that lemonade was first popularized in ancient Egypt, it is now widely available all over the world. However, commercially marketed lemonade is often carbonated and enriched with citric acid.
Various types of lemonade are prepared worldwide to
bring diversity in taste, such as cloudy lemonade, pink lemonade, brown
lemonade, and clear lemonade. Additionally, in India and Pakistan, it is known
as Nimbu pani, while in Bangladesh, it is called Lebur Shorbot. Other
variations include Shikanji, Limonana, Cherbat, Cwitsha, and Citron press which
are prepared under different names in various countries.
The primary reason for the popularity of vitamin
C-rich lemonade is the refreshing sensation it provides. This makes it a widely
consumed beverage despite its simplicity. Another factor is the high production
rate of lemons, making them readily available. The
global lemonade market valued at $9.7 billion in 2024, is
expected to grow to $16.7 billion by 2034.
Soft drinks
Soft drinks refer to all types of non-alcoholic beverages, but here, only carbonated drinks are being discussed. Utilizing the concept of carbonated water discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1767, Schweppes became the first company to sell bottled soft drinks in 1783. Following this, various brands emerged in the market, such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Fanta, 7Up, and RC Cola.
Soft drinks are packaged in glass bottles, cans, and
plastic bottles. Carbonated
beverages are essentially drinks in which carbon dioxide
dissolves into the liquid, creating a fizzy effect. In this state, carbon
dioxide appears as bubbles.
Although soft drinks contain a high amount of sugar
and are not very healthy, they remain highly popular, making the industry a
massive market. It is estimated that the
soft drinks market will reach $706.6 billion by 2025 and
may grow to $901.7 billion by 2030. However, with increasing health awareness
among consumers, carbonated beverage companies are focusing on reducing
excessive sugar use and incorporating more natural ingredients.
Milk
Milk from cows, goats, buffaloes, sheep, and horses
is commonly consumed as a beverage. Doctors generally advise against giving
anything other than breast milk to infants under six months of age. For adults
who experience digestive issues after consuming milk, various processed forms
of milk are available in the market. These include UHT milk, powdered milk,
buttermilk, condensed milk, flavored milk, evaporated milk, and dairy milk
alternatives. Lactose-free milk is also available.
India is the world's largest producer of milk.
However, the dairy market is widespread across the globe. While a significant
portion of milk comes from India,
global milk production is expected to reach 271.71
billion kilograms by 2030.
